JUDGE DAVID C. MASON
Judge David C. Mason, has served on the 22nd Judicial Circuit of Missouri in St. Louis since he was appointed in August 1991. Upon graduation from Washington University School of Law, he became an assistant attorney general. In 1985 he was appointed general counsel of the Missouri Department of Corrections. Charged with reducing the upward spiral of inmate lawsuits, he developed an inmate grievance system that has significantly reduced the per capita rate of inmate lawsuits. Judge Mason left public service in 1988 to join Peper, Martin, Jensen, Maichel & Hetlage and, later, Husch & Eppenberger, both in St. Louis. A 1980 graduate of Austin Peay State University, he is that university’s 1992 Outstanding Young Alumni. In 1999 he was named a distinguished alumnus of Washington University School of Law.
Judge Mason is a member of the American Law Institute. He serves on the boards of Washington University’s Law Alumni Association and the American Judicature Society. He is also an honorary member of the Order of the Coif and the American Board of Trial Lawyers. After sharing with his law school teammate, Cathy Gilbert Kelly, the 1983 championship title from the American College of Trial Lawyers National Trial Competition, Judge Mason went on to first assist and now coach the School of Law’s trial advocacy teams. These teams have placed first or second in the region and advanced to the nationals 18 of the last 19 years. They have advanced to the quarterfinals and beyond in the National Trial Competition 10 times, winning the national championship twice. He and his wife, the former Taunia Allen, have two sons, William and Harrison.
