Dr. Tommie Y. Turner

Dr. Tommie Yvette Turner is the Director of the Institute for Science and Mathematics at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis. She directs the Academy for Science and Mathematics for first-year students, oversees the science and mathematics tutorial program, assists with the faculty mentoring program, develops strategies to assist in the retention and matriculation of students in STEM program areas, and serves as a liaison between university units and the external STEM community. Dr. Turner earned her doctorate in pharmaceutical science/environmental toxicology from the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Florida A&M University and was a Florida Education Fund/McKnight Doctoral Fellow. She earned her master’s degree in chemistry from Missouri University of Science and Technology and was a National GEM Consortium Fellow. She earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry (cum laude) from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and was a MARC Scholar.  

 In 2015, Dr. Turner was selected as one of 100 women nationally for the Inspiring Women in STEM Awards by Insights into Diversity magazine. She is a NSF/OURS Fellow (National Science Foundation Opportunities for Under-Represented Scholars) and has received a certificate in Postgraduate Academic Leadership from theChicago School of Professional Psychology and Fielding Conclave Leadership Academy continuing education credits from Fielding Graduate University. She has held memberships in the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

 Dr. Turner has been an invited guest panelist for various STEM career panels including the Boeing Women in Leadership (BWIL), FOCUS St. Louis Women in STEM, Association of Women in Science (AWIS) and was the keynote speaker at the Fort Leonard Wood 1st Engineering Brigade Women’s History Month Observation on “Women Inspiring Innovation through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.” Her selected publications and conference presentation are as follows:
