Dr. Velma LaPoint teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on diverse youth and families; youth placed at risk and their resiliency; youth, consumer culture, and the earth; and integrative and complimentary mental health therapies and approaches.  As Principal Investigator, Co-PI, or Senior Researcher, Dr. LaPoint has conducted research relating to the socialization of diverse black youth populations, using asset-based approaches, on various topics: youth exposure to commercialized environments; parental and family strategies to promote academic achievement and social competence; college/career readiness; and culturally responsive education and health interventions for black female middle school and college students.  Dr. LaPoint has created and taught hip-hop course content, a hip-hop course, and is conducting research on hip-hop related course syllabi and dissertations at the college level.

Workshop Title:  Hip-Hop Activities in High School and College Classes: What We Know from Research

Workshop Description:  Hip-hop is being used to teach students in high schools and colleges nationally and globally.  This workshop will engage the student audience in learning how we use research in hip-hop activities in teaching high school and college classes. We will engage students in small and large group activities to meet workshop objectives.
